New Groups Forming for Fall Counseling |
There are times in all our lives when we feel unable to cope. Sometimes the causes of our problems seems fairly clear, and we know where to turn for assistance. At other times our problems are difficult to understand and we can find no answer from our own resources or contacts. That's where we come in.
Airport Marina Counseling Service offers group counseling sessions this fall including :
- Depression Group,
- Parenting Group (English and Spanish),
- Divorce Group (one for adults and one for the children)
- Bereavement Group
- Pain Management
Talking to a counselor, who is impartial and skilled, can help us work through our personal difficulties and find solutions. Groups give more insight, more ways to look at ourselves and there is comfort in not being alone; others have similar feelings, and are struggling too.
In the climate of trust provided by the group, people feel free to care about and help each other. Come join us. Contact AMCS today for more information at (310) 670-1410 – ask for Annette.

AMCS Awarded $25,000 Grant for Crisis Intervention
Airport Marina Counseling Service has received a $25,000 grant from the William H. Hannon Foundation, which will allow it to continue and expand its successful William H. Hannon Immediate Intervention Program at the 45-year-old mental health clinic, located in Westchester.
The program, underwritten by the Hannon Foundation by a grant of $12,500 received by AMCS in 2003, is designed to provide urgent attention to those who are struggling with a recent, life-changing event. Recently, Nancy Iben, Clinical Director of AMCS, and Todd Irvin, MFT, have worked to reorganize and expand the program and to provide prompt response to more people in need of help.
Clinical Director Nancy Iben says, “We cannot know how many suicides, acts of violence or abuse, or other undesirable impacts on families in the community we serve have been prevented through the unique William H. Hannon Foundation Immediate Intervention program. We do know that we frequently intervened early enough to prevent much more serious damage to those who were part of this program.”
Kathleen Hannon Aikenhead, President of the Hannon Foundation, writes:
“My uncle, William H Hannon, had a philosophy that mirrored the Chinese proverb:
If you are planning for a year, sow rice.
If you are planning for a decade, plant trees.
If you are planning for a lifetime, educate a person.
Our Board of Directors keeps that wise adage in mind when awarding our grants.”
Howard Drollinger Dies Aug. 13
Local philanthropist, Howard Drollinger, who was honored on March 19 with the AMCS lifetime achievement award at our annual Tribute to Our Friends event, died earlier this week. We extend our condolences to his friends and family.

Does your vacation relieve the stress in your life or contribute to it?
We think of vacations as a way to relieve stress. We get away from the drudgery of our lives and take a week or two to have a good time away from home. A summer survey of 1000 Americans by the Gallup organization found that most of us return from vacation more tired then when we left.
Need to de-stress from that summer vacation? Think it is time to deal with those problems you've been trying to avoid? Maybe we can help!
