And a great time was had by all……….

Thanks to all who supported our March 27th Spring Event, "Weather or Not ... Rain or Shine!"  It was a fun and successful evening and everyone had a great time!

Our guests entered the sky lit atrium area outside LMU's Roski Dining Hall. It was a festive and natural setting for a Silent Auction that included many interesting items for bidding. Cocktails and passed hors d'oeuvres enhanced the party atmosphere and there was great social interaction among our guests.

Fritz Coleman offered a wonderful and very funny show and LMU's Chef Mercer provided a delicious dinner. Everyone enjoyed our "weather food stations" where they could stack their plates high with their favorite selections.  Each table had its own "weather condition" name with a beautiful, matching floral centerpiece, which provided added fun for our guests as they looked for their assigned seats.

A highlight of the evening was a personal story shared by one of our clients from our program at the Boys and Girls Club of Venice.  She explained the positive impact our anger management group has had on her life. Now, able to manage her anger, she is looking forward to applying for college and is able to remain focused on creating good things in her life.

With over 150 guests attending we are so very pleased to announce that all our silent auction items were purchased. And ... if you were there, you know we had some fun, lively and ongoing bidding during the live auction.  Thanks to all who added to the excitement!

Special thanks go out to:
 - Fritz Coleman who in addition to his fantastic and funny show auctioned himself as a personal guide on a tour of the NBC Studios to the first taker.

 - Terry Marcellus, our emcee and "energetic" auctioneer. Terry kept the evening rolling along with lots of humor and a fun spirit that put a shining "star" on the evening.

- Our Sponsors, William H. Hannon Foundation, Playa Vista, The Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation, Los Angeles World Airport, Warren & Elaine Breslow Family Foundation, Dr. Ken Bulpitt & Dr. Liz Simmons, Jane St. John and Carli Vandervort, and The Inn at Playa del Rey.

- All our generous auction donors for the array of wonderful offerings to benefit AMCS.

- All our support behind the scenes including staff at LMU and the LMU student volunteers, our auction set-up team, and all our AMCS staff and board members.

- Special thanks to Loyola Marymount University for providing a great venue for our event and to Sodexo for a memorable meal.

- And of course ... all of you who came as guests.  We cannot do it without you!

AMCS Board Member Spotlight
Paul Rothman, Treasurer

Paul Rothman came to AMCS a little over 10 years ago bringing with him a great wealth of experience serving non-profit organizations. Beginning as a youth he served as an Eagle Scout. He also  has past associations with The San Fernando Valley Council of Girl Scouts and The Los Angeles Jewish Home.
Prior to coming to AMCS Paul served approximately another 10 years on the Board of the Daniel Freeman Foundation. It was when the Daniel Freeman Foundation split up that he was lured to AMCS.

Our mission statement is what caught Paul's attention when first meeting us.  Our mission statement is:

"To provide excellent, affordable and professional mental health services, and to train mental health professionals."

The second part ... "to train mental health professionals"... especially appealed to Paul. His wife is a therapist and AMCS's reputation as a leader in training interns is a purpose he supports.  He understands the importance of receiving quality training throughout the 3,000 required internship hours and he was happy to be a supporter.  Paul also liked the idea of being part of a smaller non-profit with a smaller board. He feels closer and more a part of the activities that actually make a difference in the lives of those we serve.

Raised in San Francisco Bay area Paul attended and graduated from Berkeley University with a degree in business.  He has experienced a long and successful career of over 50 years in the hotel and restaurant industry.  In addition to owning and running several smaller hotels in the Beverly Hills area, he has served as President of Associated Hosts, found in over 35 states. His experience, prior to his current activities, includes an association with a company that manufactured their own hot dogs with food stands at local beaches and other locations.

Today Paul has multiple interests. He operates several small restaurants in Northern California. In addition he sells for Aura Systems, a manufacturer of electric, "all green" generators used for refrigeration by the military of multiple countries. The refrigerated trucks store fruits and vegetable produce and being "green" can save up to $5,000 per year in operating costs per truck.  Paul's restaurant experience makes him a natural fit to best communicate the value of these generators.

AMCS is happy to have his business savvy on board as our Treasurer. Paul is married with 4 grown children and 5 grandchildren, ages 3 -8.  When he is not taking care of all
of us or working, you can find Paul out on the golf course.  He carries an enviable handicap of "9" and can boast of having 2 "hole-in-ones" in his lifetime .. so far!  He also likes to play
a hand of bridge from time to time with his wife.

AMCS is proud to have Paul on our Board of Director

Airport Marina Counseling Service receives grant to continue highly successful Hannon Immediate Intervention Program

Airport Marina Counseling Service (AMCS) is pleased to announce it has recently received a $25,000 grant from the William H. Hannon Foundation to continue its support of the Hannon Immediate Intervention Program. The program, initially underwritten by the Foundation in 2003, is designed to provide urgent attention to those struggling with crisis and life-changing events. The great majority of AMCS clients are the “working poor” who often lack private insurance and for whom the services of hospitals and mental health facilities are often unavailable.

“Over the last five years, The Hannon Immediate Intervention Program has become a key component of the services here at AMCS and it continues to make a real difference in the lives of the many clients we have served. We are grateful for the Foundation’s steadfast support of this important program,” said Kathleen O’Leary Lefferman, M.A, Executive Director of AMCS.

The overall goal of the Hannon Immediate Intervention Program and services is to relieve or resolve the symptoms and improve coping skills within a brief structured therapy program of between 8 to 12 weeks of intervention.

“Our Board has been very pleased with the success of the Intervention Program in meeting the needs of people who are not only in crisis but, without the program, would most likely not be able to find help,” said Kathleen Hannon Aikenhead, President of the William H. Hannon Foundation and a member of the AMCS Board of Governors.
